What is happening tonight
Tesla is holding an outdoor demonstration of the second-generation Roadster near Waco, Texas, close to SpaceX's McGregor test site, and streaming it live. The event was first set for October 1; on September 28 Tesla moved it to October 15, citing severe weather, because the demonstration can only be held outside. Elon Musk later pointed to high winds as the cause.
Nine years of waiting
The Roadster was unveiled as a concept in November 2017, alongside the Semi. Tesla's claims at the time were striking: 0 to 60 mph in 1.9 seconds, a top speed above 250 mph, a range of 620 miles, a base price of $200,000 and a Founders Series at $250,000. Production was targeted for 2020. It slipped, repeatedly, while Tesla built the Model Y, the Cybertruck and its robotaxi programme instead. Reporting now points to production in 2027 or 2028. None of the 2017 figures has been confirmed for the production car; tonight is the first real test of what survives.
What to watch for
- Whether the car on stage is the production design or another prototype, and how far it has moved from the 2017 concept.
- Updated performance figures, stated plainly: acceleration, top speed, range, battery and charging.
- The optional SpaceX package. Musk has long talked about cold gas thrusters and has claimed a 0 to 60 mph time under one second with the package fitted. A hovering demonstration has been widely speculated about; Tesla has not confirmed one. Treat anything of the kind as unproven until it happens on camera.
- Firm production and delivery dates, and final pricing, against the $200,000 figure quoted since 2017.
